Peats Group Ltd are proud to announce that Managing Director, Peter Wadewitz has been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, receiving a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the organic recycling industry.

Peter has been Managing Director of Peats Soil & Garden Supplies since 1974 and BiobiN® Technologies Australia since 1996.

“This is an unbelievable honour. I am blown away; it is something you never expect,” Peter said. “I just do what I do because I am so passionate about it. I have been involved in composting for 50 years. You have your head down and your tail up, because you believe in what you are doing.”

Peter has been leading the way in organics recycling both locally and nationally in a number of capacities. He was founding Director of the Australian Organics Recycling Association (AORA) in 2012 (previously Compost for Soils), National Chair in 2017 and is current Chair of the SA Branch.

Currently Peter is also committee member of the National Waste and Recycling Industry Council, SA branch, board member of Master Landscapers of South Australia (MLSA), member of the Horticultural Media Association SA and board member of Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland SA.

Service to the industry over many decades includes positions as board member of National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia (2004), member of Barton Group’s Export Task Force (2003), member of Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council Working Group – Australian Industries Sustainable Competitiveness (2002), member of Environment Industry Cluster Group (2001) past board member Waste Management of Association of Australia and past national and state (SA) chair and inaugural member (1996) of Compost Australia.

Peter has received numerous accolades over the years including Environmentalist of the Year Award, SA Great (2006) and Local Business Award, City of Onkaparinga (1996) for development of the BiobiN®. Last year Peter was awarded the prestigious Frank Ugody Memorial Award for his valuable contribution to the landscape industry by the MLSA.

Peter said, “Composting is a circular economy in action. There is nothing more rewarding than being part of an industry that sees plants and organic materials as a resource rather than waste, and transforming this resource into composted products that feed the soil that in turn grows more plants and nutrient rich food. And so the cycle continues.”
