On-Site Composting Projects
South Australian Wineries

  By Chris Abbie

Since 1999 Peats Soil have been working with a number of wineries throughout South Australia composting winery residuals on site.

Materials such as grape marc, stems, stalks and filtration earth have been blended with organic composted mulch to produce a surface mulch for under vine application.

Benefits from this initiative include:
Environmentally sustainable management of winery waste material
Economically sound alternative to waste disposal to landfill
Reduced water use for irrigation by 30%

Reduced need for herbicide and pesticide use due to weed suppression and improved vine health
Improved soil health with increased microbial activity
Improved fruit quality
Greater $ return

A total of approximately 75,000 tonnes of winery waste material has been recovered and reused since the commencement of the on-site composting program.

Final product is produced to NASAA certification and accordingly can be applied or on-sold to organic vineyards as an approved organic farm input material.
